Business Leaders Putting an End to ChatGPT

Talks about rising AI technology have overtaken the world in the past few months. When Chat GPT gained popularity with promises of revolutionizing the tech world, more and more AI platforms started popping up, all using Artificial Intelligence to perform tasks previously only performed by humans. From school and university professors to CEOs, people quickly became concerned with AI replacing human effort and knowledge.

Over in the tech world, we have been constantly bombarded with brand-new AI tools, but people have been raising a series of concerns over technology evolving at such a fast pace. Chat GPT-4 was the latest update of the now famous AI tool, and it was noticeably much more advanced than what people expected from technology today. Several AI experts, tech gurus, and scientists teamed up to write a letter begging everyone to stop messing around with AI tech that’s more advanced than OpenAI’s GPT-4 language model. They want folks to take a good, hard look at the risks of these kinds of tech.

“We call on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 (including the currently-being-trained GPT-5),” states the letter

The letter warns that language models like GPT-4 are getting good at creating content that only humans used to be able to do, and they’re worried these machines could replace humans at specific jobs and while simultaneously producing false statements. Plus, they’re seriously worried that AI could replace people and upend our society.

What Risks Does AI Technology Pose?

So, is AI technology a threat to humanity? The answer to this question comes with a lot of nuances. Replacing human talent with any technology is challenging because AI lacks humans’ complex thinking skills and emotions. With that being said, we also have to consider that technology like Chat GPT can generate content that simulates human-created content to a scary accuracy.

However, like any technology, it comes with its limitations. Chat GPT generates its content based on the data available when it was being developed; for this reason, it only has knowledge of events up to 2021. But that is only the tip of the iceberg regarding how limited it can be. AI can give you answers that seem right, but they need to be corrected. Long story short, AI often give wrong answers, even to important questions.

Business Leaders putting a stop to ChatGPT is a warning and an attempt to stop technology from going beyond the point where developments are happening faster than society and regulators can come to terms with.

Are There Ethical Ways to Make Use of AI Technology?

We will go right ahead and establish right now that AI is not evil (at least not for now). When properly used, AI tools can be a wonderful way to help humans automate processes and use our time more efficiently. Those thinking that technology like Chat GPT can replace human work need to consider that this type of AI technology, like most of the ones out there, needs humans to prompt it to work.

So yes! With the proper regulations, we could all benefit from using technology like Chat GPT. After all, business leaders putting a stop to ChatGPT is only a measure to ensure we can develop the proper regulations to enjoy this technology without severe repercussions in the future.

Now Back to the Letter:

The Future of Life Institute, an organization focused on technological risks to humanity, was the one to write and present the letter, signed by hundreds of influential figures in different industries, predominantly the tech industry. They asked for the stop to be “public and verifiable” and involves all AI technology similar to Chat GPT, and being worked on at the moment. To mention some, signatures included Yoshua Bengio, a professor at the University of Montreal considered a pioneer of modern AI, historian Yuval Noah Harari, Skype cofounder Jaan Tallinn, and Twitter CEO Elon Musk.

Overall, the letter called for a much-needed pause that should be enacted asap; it also called for governments to step in if the break was not implemented. Most people consider this a much-needed step in developing new technologies and hope it leads to adequately regulating the development and use of AI technology.
